The German Telecommunications Regulator has announced that it is introducing a law which stipulates that German telephone networks must anonymize all incoming traffic from interconnect trunks outside of Germany, carrying a German number. This law will come into effect on the 1 December 2022.
This is an increasingly common change that is being introduced across the world – France applied a similar change in 2019. The main driver is to reduce the volume of nuisance calls routing internationally towards Germany and therefore the likelihood of fraudulent calls occurring.
What calls does it affect?
FROM is German, PAID is UK (or another country) – FROM will be suppressed and forwarded as “anonymous”
FROM is German, PAID is German – FROM will be suppressed and forwarded as “anonymous”
FROM is UK (or another country), PAID is German – UK number will be displayed
Is there a solution?
If you need to continue providing services to a German site presenting a German number, you will need to display a UK number in the FROM field otherwise the Calling Line Identification (CLI) will be displayed as anonymous.
