A Year Closer to The PSTN Switch-off

As we welcome in 2026, we see the deadline for the PSTN Switch-off draw a year closer.

All businesses and individuals running outdated copper infrastructure for their connectivity such as phone lines and broadband, will need to migrate over to newer, more reliable solutions.

Why Is The Switch-off Happening?

Openreach have decided to discontinue the sales and support of old copper-based networks due to their high maintenance costs and aging systems. Back in 2023, the WLR systems saw an increase of 60% downtime, and since has been leaving users at constant risk of disruption. On the back of these outdated systems now being increasingly unreliable, as of 2026, Ofcom will no longer support any WLR services under their framework. This could lead to sudden increases in pricing and possible compliance issues, highlighting the importance to switch over to more efficient, digital alternatives.

Why Act Now?

As the deadline draws closer, more and more businesses will start to submit change requests, and providers will become overloaded with submissions. The switch-over isn’t just a simple flick of a switch, it takes time and dedicated planning between suppliers and engineers, especially for larger organisations. As the completion date nears, Openreach will begin prioritising earlier submissions first, leaving last-minute requests at risk of a forced cease or order rejection.

WLR services are being ceased by suppliers right now, in preparation for the deadline of 2027. Although you will be given notice, suppliers like Openreach can start ceasing WLR services already, if you’re line isn’t migrated in time, you could be left with costly downtime and disruption. This can affect things such as alarm systems, lift lines and business critical lines.

As these outdated services begin to be neglected and attention beings to narrow onto newer solutions such as VoIP and FTTP, these older systems are prone to downtime and a reduction in quality, such as crackling lines and reduced liability. With the focus now being modern, digital systems, sourcing an engineer to resolve WLR line issues could present as a challenge.
